We strongly support statements released by various civil society organizations and other stakeholders condemning the suspension of the microblogging platform, Twitter in Nigeria as this shows the level of lawlessness and disregard for rule of law. This act, as we imagine, is a prequel to many digital rights violations to come.
We strongly condemn the actions of the Federal Government as violating the right to expression and we encourage Nigerians to protect the rule of law.
We categorically note that the Nigeria Police cannot arrest citizens based on the illegal ban, as no law criminalizes the use of Twitter, hence, the Nigeria Police cannot arrest/detain anyone on that basis.
It is not an offense!
We are in full support of fellow Nigerians exercising their fundamental human rights demanding the Federal Government to immediately reverse the Twitter ban.
