Following the establishment of the judicial panel of inquiry and restitution to receive and investigate cases of SARS and Police brutality in different States of the federation; we took the initiative to create more awareness to the general public and more so, provide legal support to the victims by helping victims to document the evidence and articulate the cases at the Judicial Panel of Inquiry.
At citizens’ gavel, justice for one and justice for all is our modus operandi. Seeing indigent citizens with their human rights being violated and trampled upon vindicated gives us the utmost sense of purpose and responsibility.
A couple of years ago, the public can recall the case of the Late Kolade Johnson that was shot dead while watching a football match by an officer of the Anti-Cultism Police unit during a raid in Lagos. Gavel’s legal team was instrumental in seeing justice is served and upheld as the sum of 10million Naira was paid to the victim’s family for damages on the 25th of June, 2021 by the panel of inquiry.
Still on the mission of justice being served, the case of Suleimon Vs FSARS, where the victim was shot in the neck in 2016 by a police officer. Once again, Gavel’s ever-active legal team was fundamental in the legal and Panel of inquiry proceedings that saw justice being dished out after the petitioner was awarded the sum of 8million naira as compensation.
The good work of activism does not end here as our legal team is always on the move around the clock in all states of the Federal Republic of Nigeria monitoring and observing the Panel proceedings and also providing prompt legal support to victims and families of victims.
Currently, our network of legal associates and resource lawyers are available at various States of the federations to observe the panel proceedings and provide prompt legal support for victims as well as relatives of victims.
