Prior to our visit to Suleja Custodial Centre (Plateau State) in September 2021, we interviewed Amadu (pseudo), an inmate that was arrested in August 2021 on the charges of witness/accessory to a crime and conspiracy.
Amadu was taken to court without a proper arraignment. He was further remanded in custody with his case adjourned, but he could not be produced in court due to logistics challenges at the Custodial centre. Gavel’s legal team picked up the case and got to work by visiting the court where his case was being heard. Our legal team also ensured that Amadu was brought to court from custody.
The case took 3 further adjournments before our team could have a business day with the court. On the 15th of November, 2021, we applied for the bail of Amadu which was granted.
The matter is now adjourned to the 12th of January 2022 for hearing.
