FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

We invite the Executive Governor of Enugu State, Mr. Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi to immediately order the implementation of the report of the Administrative Panel of Inquiry Enugu, submitted on the 15th of March, 2021, without further delay.

Against the backdrop of the #EndSARS protests of 2020, which led to further brutality by men of the Nigeria Police, Enugu State was among the 28 States that set up judicial panels of inquiry to investigate police brutality and claims of extrajudicial killing, as directed by the National Economic Council in 2020.

The Enugu State Governor, Mr. Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi, constituted a 9-member Administrative Panel of Inquiry on the 28th of October, 2020, to clearly ascertain the number of victims of the #EndSARS protests in the state and recommend compensations.

Many of these victims have been destitute, having lost their breadwinners. Some have been unable to fend for themselves and their families due to disabilities occasioned by these brutalities. Some of these victims and their family members appeared before the Administrative Panel to seek compensation and they gave evidence.

It has been more than 18 months since the report of the Administrative Panel of Inquiry Enugu was submitted to the Governor of Enugu State. Implementation is still awaited.

We invite the Governor of Enugu State to borrow a leaf from the FCT and Lagos State, among other States that have started disbursing to victims, the compensation awarded by their respective Panels of Inquiry.

We believe this will be a gradual step towards rebuilding the people’s trust in the Nigeria Police and by extension, in the Government.
