Following the nationwide #EndSARS protest, police brutality, arbitrary arrests, and extrajudicial killings by law enforcement agencies in Lagos State remain unstopped despite sustained efforts by stakeholders. Recently, late Mr Sunday Agbemoshe was allegedly tortured and murdered in the CPSS Unit of the Nigeria Police Force headquarters, Ikeja, Lagos.
In our open letter to the Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwoolu, we proposed that he facilitates the establishment of the Police Complaint Response Unit in Lagos as a measure to swiftly investigate issues of abuse, and curb police brutality and protect Lagosians.
Secondly, we requested that, in conjunction with the Chief Judge of Lagos, ensure the implementation of Sec. 34 of ACJA/Law that mandates the Chief Magistrate to pay unscheduled visits to Police Stations to prevent arbitrary detention.
More facts and recommendations are detailed in our attached letter.
